Whereas differences in people's religious or spiritual beliefs have been and continue to be a source of misunderstanding, animosity, and even violence; and because this dismal lack of mutual knowledge and acceptance seems to be dangerously escalating in our time --
We therefore wish to proclaim the month of July as a month dedicated to deepening the spiritual atmosphere in our community, and to finding new ways to learn about each other's faiths and practices. Perhaps in this way we can forestall and prevent the disastrous scenarios that have unfolded in some places that have ignored too long the need to get to know each other, and to learn respect for traditions other than our own.
It is our hope that this proclamation will serve as a seed or a catalyst to encourage a wide variety of meetings, initiatives, and programs dedicated to increasing our mutual understanding, tolerance, and realization that we have many basic values in common, however diverse our ways of expressing them. May we all learn to live in love and peace together!
