Workshop descriptions and presenters

Morning Workshops: 10:05 - 11:35
A. "Mary in the Gospels"  We will explore the growing interest in Mary, 
evident when we compare the four Canonical Gospels, Mark, Matthew, Luke, and 
John. Presenter is  Margaret N. Ralph, Ph.D., the Secretary of Education for 
the Catholic Diocese of Lexington. She is a noted author with eight books on 
scripture. She directs several Masters degree programs at Lexington 
Theological. Seminary, and  is a popular speaker and workshop presenter. 
B. "Women Christian Mystics." We will discuss the lives of six medieval 
Christian women and explore ways in which our own spirituality can learn from 
their examples.  The women include Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe, 
Mechthild of Magdeburg, Hadewijch of Brabant, Hildegard of Bingen and 
Catherine of Siena. Presenter is Jane McAvoy, Ph.D, Assoc Professor, 
Lexington Theological Seminary, writer and author. 
C. "Styles of Faith." This workshop will present the styles (stages) of 
"faithing" & how our faith grows--which have emerged from the research of 
James Fowler of Emory University. Persenter: Sharon Warner, Ph. D., Professor 
of Educational Ministry, Lexington Theological Seminary.
D. "Everyday Holy: Driving Car-pool in the Presence of the Spirit."  Women's 
work includes what Kathleen Norris calls "Quotidian Mysteries, Everyday 
Chores which reveal the Holy Spirit." Using different media we will explore 
the everyday holy. Presenter: Rev. Claire Brooks is a Presbyterian Co-Pastor 
with her husband in parish ministry.
E. "Spiritual Architecture." Explanation and discussion of Maharishi 
Sthapatya Veda design which gives dimensions, formulas, and orientations that 
provide cosmic harmony and support for personal health and peace. Presenter: 
Sue Weller, a TM teacher, designs buildings according to Vedic principles.  
F.  The Spirituality of Birth. We will explore images of birthing and suggest 
a spirituality of birthing, i.e.,  using our creative energies to face 
personal challenges through the seasons of our lives. Presenters: Nancy Combs 
Morgan, Director of Religious Education at the Unitarian Church, LTS student, 
and Vicki Wenz, who is a Roman Catholic, also a 3rd year MDiv student at 
Lexington Theological Seminary (LTS).
G. "Ancient Shamanic Healing." Drumming will be used to learn a shamanic 
technique for accessing other realities.  Participants connect with their 
helping spirits to ask for counsel.  This ancient way of healing is core 
shamanics .  Presenter: Sister Joanne Shuster, Ph. D., is the founder of the 
Franciscan Holistic Center in Cincinnati,  which combines traditional Western 
scientific medicine with ancient alternative practices.
H. "Equal Education for a Muslim woman."   We will uncover common Western 
misunderstandings of the Muslim culture regarding women.  Presenter: Mubeen 
Mohiuddin is a Muslim educator from India who served as a Professor of 
English and is now an active parent, teacher, and volunteer promoting 
cultural and religious diversity, such as our Many Faces of Spirit 
conferences in the past. 
I. "One in the Bond of Love"  Part 1. "Working together to develop an 
understanding of the ecumenical spirit as an integral part of Christian 
heritage"." Part one will be primarily a video produced by the Commission On 
Local Ecumenism, of the Kentucky Council of Churches. Presenter: Nelson 
French is n ordained Christian lay minister. He is Executive Director of 
All-Faiths Foundation, and Coordinator of The Humanitarium.
J. "When is it a 'Woman's World' for a Man?" We will explore what in the 
universe of significant human experience is "owned" by women, so that men are 
"outsiders," and some consequences for human well being.  Presenter: Paschal 
Baute is a grandfather, a retired marital counselor and has a storytelling 
ministry with drum.

Afternoon Workshops 1:15 - 2:45

O. "The Divine Feminine in Mayan Spirituality." Offers the opportunity to 
experience connection and healing from Sacred Cosmic and Earth energies 
channeled through a priestess in the ancient Mayan tradition. Expect change 
in your life.  Presenter: Patricia Morris Cardona, MS, RN, CS is a Mayan Fire 
Priestess in the sacred Mayan feminine society and co-founder of the Cosmic 
Mysteries School. 
P. "Female Images of the Deity." From East to West, from ancient to modern 
times, Deity has been imagined in strong female forms.  We will visually 
explore holy images from America and India.  Come prepared to exercise your 
spiritual creativity.  Presenters (2) Nancy Combs Morgan, Director of 
Religious Education at the UUCL, and by Mitra Jafarzadeh, student at 
Lexington Theological Seminary.
Q. "Gender Roles for Men and Women. " You will learn a process to understand 
societal pressures placed on women and men, then learn a safe and effective 
form of communicating feelings that arise in male/female relationships. 
Presenters:  Karen Kendrick is Program Director of the National Conference 
for Community and Justice (NCCJ). and Roger Pierson is a facilitator with the 
Mankind Project (An international men's organization). 
R. "Celtic Spirituality." We will explore how Celtic spirituality emphasizes 
God's presence and celebrates God's creation to speak to our present age. We 
examine how Celtic Symbols may enrich both worship and worship space. 
Presenters: Beth Rupe and LeAnn Hodges are both MDiv students at Lexington 
Theological Seminary, serving as campus minister and student pastor.    
S. "Understanding the Goddess." We will explore and discuss goddess-centered 
religion, including the women's mysteries of the ancient Mediterranean and 
the reappearance of the goddess in modern traditions. Presenter: Sarah Glenn 
has been a Pagan for fifteen years and is a priestess in the Hellenic 
Tradition. 
T. "The Role of Woman in Islam." Muslim women's wearing of the hijab (veil) 
has provoked much discussion among Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The 
spiritual meaning of hijab and other issues, will be discussed. Presenter: 
Wafa Nashnoosh is a mother of three sons, American citizen, a technician in 
nuclear medicine at St Joseph East Hospital. She was born in Libya, grew up 
in Egypt, and has taught literature at Al Azhar University in Cairo.
U. "Buddhist Meditation Practice." Where do women fit in the Tibetan Buddhist 
mandala?  Has it changed with the tradition coming to the West?  Meditation 
instruction and a short practice session. Presenter: Ms. Shelley Heinz, 
Buddhist practitioner for 22 years, Director of the Shambhala Meditation 
Center, meditation instructor, and Director of Training.
V. "One in the Bond of Love"  Part 2. Continuation. Part two in the afternoon 
will be spent in a group discussion on what ecumenism means to us as 
individuals, and as people of faith. Nelson French.
Representatives of the Native American Cherokee Tradition will offer a 
blessing over the food we bring (brown bag) outside on the Newman Center 
Patio during the time for lunch: 11:35 - 1:15. They will use traditional 
Indian herbs, ritual and ceremony.
